Fractalmed

Description and scope

FractalmedThe objective of the Fractalmed project is to develop a system for early diagnosis of neurological diseases using the Fractal Dimension Analysis of Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

The project is based on the application of a procedure for analysing magnetic resonance images of white and grey brain matter in two and three dimensions (single and serial images) and transforming these images into Quantitative Parameters of Fractal Geometry. The objective is to try and detect the development of the disease before lesions appear in order to begin treatment that prevents or delays their appearance.

Up till now this analysis technique has been applied to MS (Multiple Sclerosis) but the idea is to apply this tool to other neurological diseases where resonance imaging shows no apparent disease or disorder though symptoms may be present. These are, primarily, Autism, Alzheimer, Schizophrenia and Depression.

The application of this system to MS is currently in the process of intellectual property protection for its subsequent commercial development once the system has completed clinical validation.
